Introducing, the rub-in gel!
Better remove all your prejudices on what contraceptives should be for this new male will blow your mind!
Since the previous years, the want for male contraceptives has been on the rise but to no avail. Now, a novel one may just be our answer.
Researchers from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the US National Institutes of Health, created a topical gel that will hinder the production of sperm--temporarily.
So, how does it work? Well, don’t rub it on your genitals or drink it! This unique gel should only be rubbed onto your upper arms and shoulders every day. Half a teaspoon could go a long way!
What's in it? Two hormones: progestin and testosterone. The former stops the testes from producing the needed amount of testosterone to make normal levels of sperm. And the latter stops any other hormone imbalances. In theory, an application of this combo takes effect for up to 72 hours.
“I am very confident that if men put the gel on every day and apply it correctly, it will be effective,” lead investigator Dr Stephanie Page, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, told MIT Technology Review.
Can you just imagine if these things actually get into the market?! The creation of male contraceptives has been held back for decades for numerous scientific and social reasons. For one, this won't possibly be sellable as one study showed that only 25 percent of men would consider using a hormonal contraceptive.
Nonetheless, this gel will hopefully have its four-year clinical trial starting April 2018 of which over 400 couples from across the globe will be participating. Can't wait for this to be available soon!
