Boom! The Dangers of Microwaving Hard-Boiled Eggs

It'll leave you a messy eggsplosion.

Your breakfast plate may not be so safe at all. A hard-boiled egg that’s reheated in the microwave could explode when you bite into it or prick it.

It all started when a man filed a lawsuit claiming that a hard-boiled egg, reheated in a microwave, at a restaurant exploded in his mouth, causing him severe burns and hearing damage. This sparked the interest of researchers Anthony Nash and Lauren von Blohn from Charles M. Salter Associates in San Francisco.

They used, of course, hard-boiled the eggs and the placed it in a water bath. They then reheated it for three minutes. At some instances, eggs exploded while in the microwave. About 30 percent of the eggs tested, however, survived. So, they continued by removing those and positioned them on the floor, of which they've poked with a meat thermometer to make them explode.

Results showed that about a foot away, the explosive sound covered a range of 86 to 133 decibles. For comparison, it's like a chainsaw or thunder at the upper level. Moreover, the eggsplosion is actually too brief to cause any hearing damage. That means the greatest danger of this would be the explosion itself.

“On a statistical basis, the likelihood of an egg exploding and damaging someone's hearing is quite remote,” Nash said in a statement. “It's a little bit like playing egg roulette."

Additionally, when yolk's temperature was inspected, they found that it is actually hotter than the surrounding water, suggesting that the yolk is more receptive to the microwave radiation. Researchers explained that this is because the protein in the egg traps pockets of water in the yolk that are heated well above the boiling temperature. The disturbance in such pockets then results to a chain reaction leading to the explosion.

So, to avoid the mess and injury, and for your own sake, don't. put. hard. boiled. eggs. in. microwaves.
