Facebook's Bringing Harry Potter Universe's Moving Portraits Into Reality!

Have you seen this wizard?

Who would've forgotten the awesome moving portraits and pictures in the movie, Harry Potter? Smiling, gasping, winking, or getting up to mischief--name it. The good news? That's what your next Facebook profile pic could be!

With their new tool, you only need to have a single image of a face. You can then go create your animated happy, sad, or angry version--as easy as that! Theoretically, your face can be mapped into any expression (even the ones you never imagined doing), however, the effect of tweaking on the picture can look weird. Nonetheless, results of the study showed half of the participants to be fooled into believing the edited pictures are real.

“We’ve shown that reactive profile pictures are possible,” says Hadar Averbuch-Elor at Tel Aviv University, who conducted the research as part of a collaboration with Facebook.

Behind these genius animations that could be the future pictures of our favorite "book" is a "base" video from a person. This person need not to be of the same gender or look similar. The tool just needs his/her facial expression so it can be mapped onto a still image. It is then warped to create an illusion of animated expression.

One problem is that smiles vary from a closed one to a great set of pearly whites being revealed. So, having a single image that doesn't show teeth can create a picture that steals those from another person's video. “[But] we found that if we change the teeth people don’t notice too much,” says Averbuch-Elor.

Future use?

Well, can you imagine somebody (a profile picture) smiling in response to your "like" on a post? Researchers think that would be great! And with the constant advances are also the continuing improvement of this technology. “I think eventually they will be completely indistinguishable from real videos,” says Averbuch-Elor.

Can't wait to see where this goes!
