It's a trick.

If it looks like wine and it tastes like wine, is it wine? Digitally experience flavors and shake up the traditional cocktail with Vocktail! What's in it? A dash of electronics that tricks your senses into thinking that such glass of water is something else.

Nimesha Ranasinghe and his team at the National University of Singapore created this device. How to use it, you ask? Well, it's really simple: just pour a liquid into the glass then alter and augment the flavors by using a phone app! Specifically, three aspects of the drink can be changed to affect its taste.

One, choose the color of the drink via an LED in the glass to change your perception. Then, you can go for the taste--make it sweeter, saltier or bitterer--thanks to this tongue-stimulating electrodes around the rim that produces different electrical patterns. Finally, have the full experience as a tube in the side of the glass releases gases with different smells. This specific ingredient actually opens up many more flavour combinations.

Now, you can go enjoy your favorite drink and satisfy your taste buds without the guilt of consuming unwanted calories! You can even share your recipe with your friends! Virtual drinking on the go. Can you imagine normalizing this?

“A Vocktail could become a welcome addition to social experiences in virtual pubs or bars,” says Adalberto Simeone at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in Belgium.

What a time to be alive.
