How Did You Manage to Suck Up All the Water of this Ocean, Hurricane Irma?

Hurricane Irma is the most powerful storm to ever rage through the Atlantic Ocean. So powerful that it sucks water from the coastline, leaving the ocean looking like a desert.

If you don’t believe in words, then what about photos and videos? In a video recorded by Twitter user @Kaydi_K, it shows how the shoreline has no water for hundreds of meters.  She tweeted, saying: “I am in disbelief right now... This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!!! That's as far as they see #HurricaneIrma wtf."

After the hurricane passed through the Bahamas, another Twitter user @deejayeasya shared a picture of the empty coastline of the country. He tweeted saying that the sea has “gone dry”.

An atmospheric scientist named Angela Fritz explained how hurricane Irma is so strong that it can suck water from its surroundings. “The wind on Long Island in the Bahamas is from the southeast to the northwest on Saturday. On the northwest side of the island, it would be blowing the water away from the shoreline,” Fritz says.

“It also may be experiencing the effects of what I call the hurricane 'bulge'. In the center of the storm, where there is extreme low pressure, water is drawn upward. Low pressure is basically a sucking mechanism — it sucks the air into it, and when it’s really low, it can change the shape of the surface of the ocean.”

She also added that waters receding is not a sign of a tsunami coming and the water will return to Long Island in a few days. And sure enough, it did, and @deejayeasya tweeted another picture showing that the waters are back in the Bahamas. But on the side of the United States, pictures of waters being drained are posted across different places in Florida, and could mean that the water will surge back in, causing possible damage.

As of now, Irma has killed at least 24 people while passing the Caribbean and is making landfall in Florida. Stay safe everyone.
