Well, here's another move the ever famous and favorite US president did.
As a public announcement, he used Twitter to tell everyone how he care so much about the country that he had to disallow transgender people to serve "in any capacity" in the US military--a clear reverse of Obama's move towards inclusivity. Whew, isn't that brilliant?
However, research may not be on his side. A 2016 study commissioned by the Pentagon found how a small fraction of openly transgender armed forces personnel have not only costs them little but doesn't have significant impact on military's capabilities as well. This undoubtedly contradicts the president's notions.
The report of RAND Corporation in 2016 shows that only about 1320 to 6630 transgender people are in the military which constitutes just 0.1 to 0.5 per cent of these personnel. From this, only 29 to 129 would have any type of gender transition-related care!
But what about the cost? Oh wait, we have to spend millions for them?
Lol, right. Hormone therapy and surgery for transgender military members costs about $2.4 million to $8.4 million per year. However, that is just around 0.1% of the healthcare budget for active military personnel! What's more is that there would only be less than 0.0015% of loss in the total available labor-years in staffing as a result of transition-related treatment. Such a huge expenditure lost to people who are willing to literally give their life in the name of serving the country, right?
“Evidence from foreign militaries and the US military has indicated no significant impact on unit cohesion or operational readiness as a result of allowing transgender and gay and lesbian personnel to serve openly or allowing women to serve in ground combat positions,” the report notes.
Now, tell me, how is their service to humanity a burden again?
