SanDisk announced last year that it will release a 1TB SD card sometime in 2017.
The world of SD cards isn't really very exciting. In fact, we can even say that it's pretty dull. However, imagine one terabyte of storage in an accessory just a bit bigger than your thumb. This little SD card basically contains more storage than your large and heavy computer hard disk. If that's not exciting, then you may be privy to a lot of tech secrets that the rest of us don't know.
SanDisk announced the existence of the card in September of last year. Just two years before that in 2014, SanDisk also announced the 512MB SD card. At the time, it was the SD card with the world's largest capacity.
Now, SanDisk aims to set another record. They've come a long way since they released their first SD card 16 years ago, which had a capacity of just 64 MB.
SD stands for secure digital. It has four different “card families” that indicate the standard for capacity. The card families are Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the Extended-Capacity (SDXC), and the SDIO. The new terabyte SD card is an SDXC.
The SDXC format has had five versions, the fifth and latest of which came out on February of this year. Version 5.0 SDXC cards are now able to handle high-resolution video formats of 8K. SDXC can support cards with capacities of up to 2TB, which makes it the ideal format for SanDisk's new card.
SanDisk unveiled the prototype for the 1TB SDXC at Photokina last year. The company certainly didn't come up with this new SD card just for the sake of it. With the emergence of high-resolution photos and videos, virtual reality, and 360-degree video, storage technologies have to keep up. As our files get larger and larger, our storage capacity needs to grow as well. Companies need to be able to keep up with people's demands for higher-quality and high-resolution content, which means that the technology needs to be able to deliver.
The good news is that this 1TB SD card may be available for purchase soon. The bad news is that it may be extremely expensive. The 512GB Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I memory card, which is still available on retail, costs about $600. We can expect the 1TB iteration of the card to be more expensive.
As of now, there's no release date yet for the 1TB SD card. However, it's one of the innovations that we can expect to become available to the public this year. Thus, keep an eye out for it during these coming months.
