This isn’t as comfortable as I thought it would. This spider-bot actually almost looks amazing standing in a field- until it moves. Those legs are just so fast it’s so unsettling.
With its obviously spider-like appearance, it’s really difficult to not reflexively react in a way when one sees an eight-legged arachnid in an unexpected place. But of course, scary as it may look like, there’s a practical reason for developing such.
Created by the robotics researchers at the Suzumori Endo Lab at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, this insect robot named Titan-XIII was designed to carry things from place to place. Researchers also used this to prove that insect-style quadruped robots could walk as fast as mammal style robots and are even better at moving on uneven ground.
They pointed out that insectoid robots have lower centers of gravity, and greater stability than mammal-robots. They even made this invention better by changing how these sprawling robots move. They’ve programmed it to trot and move their diagonal pairs of legs forward at the same time. Unlike usual insect robot, Titan-XIII remains stable when running as it’s designed to swing around the stable diagonal legs when it falls.
This robot’s legs are replaceable and acts similarly to joints that has three axes of movement. This is made possible by the four little motors for each leg with pulleys and wires replicating the function of muscle tendons to move the spider legs. It’s also wifi-controlled (for now) under a computer program. So nothing to worry about it moving in the middle of the night and creeping into your bedroom- or at least not yet.

. But this could significantly improve the robot’s productivity and stability in handling materials better, safer and more efficient. This might just be marked by the Guinness as the world’s creepiest breakthrough but if it gets the work done, why not?
