Have you heard about the famous movie, “The Space Between Us”, wherein a child was born in Mars? This human settlement in the reddish, terrestrial planet could possibly be put into reality with United Arab Emirate’s ambitious plan to build a new city on Mars! This idea was announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and vice president of the UAE, at 5th World Government Summit in Dubai last Tuesday. They were particularly looking forward to building the first city on Mars by 2117. This concept city was designed to be about the size of Chicago for guests to explore. “The new project is a seed that we plant today, and we expect future generations to reap the benefits, driven by its passion to learn to unveil a new knowledge,” Maktoum said in a statement. “The landing of people on other planets has been a long-time dream for humans. Our aim is that the UAE will spearhead international efforts to make this dream a reality.” Moreover, practical steps were emphasized for this 100-year-plan. The project is anticipated to create an Emirati scientific team that would later on expand and include international scientists. These teams are expected to seek and develop a faster means of transportation to and from the planet. The sustainability in terms of food, energy and transportation will also be focused and further looked upon. “Human ambitions have no limits, and whoever looks into the scientific breakthroughs in the current century believes that human abilities can realize the most important human dream,” Maktoum coins. Recent space exploration plans especially those focused in Mars have caused speculations and criticisms due to their ambitious time frame and costly missions. However, the UAE's latest venture and distant goal of creating this ambitious city forms a little more realistic possibility. Although the fulfillment of this grandiose idea isn’t certain yet, with humans’ brilliant minds, this could bring the humanity to a literal new horizon. This could be the future life of our species.
