It's a glorious day for the planet! Tesla announced in a meeting that their solar roofs will be cheaper than regular roofs, even before the savings in electricity are included.
"It’s looking quite promising that a solar roof actually cost less than normal roof before you even take the value of electricity into account. So the basic proposition would be ‘Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, last twice as long, cost less and by the way generates electricity’ why would you get anything else,” said Elon Musk
, Tesla CEO.
According to Tesla, it's possible with the roof industry today. Some roofs have materials that are too fragile, and adding its breakage costs would make normal roofs pricier than Tesla's.
Also, there are other factors to be considered for the pricing of roofs. The company weighed out these points, and they're pretty sure the cost of the company's solar roof will be cheaper, even after the labor costs are included.
Tesla said their solar roof would probably be more cheaper because it's much lighter, and more durable than any other roofs available today. Which means, the company would save a lot on their shipping expenses.
However, it should be expected that Tesla's roofs will have varying prices. Prices still depend on the product type, size, and mode of installation.
Nevertheless, this is a future to look forward to in housing industries. It will be huge deduction in expenses, not only in house materials, but surely, a huge trim in electricity.
There are no product prices released, yet. However, the company's announcement
sure do sound promising. Tesla's solar roof production is expected to begin in 2017.
A friendly reminder for consumers, though: No hoarding, please.
