Remember that time when we were so afraid of going to the dentist? Not all had a magnificent time in that dental chair, we can assume. Also, definitely, losing a tooth, especially when we're passed that baby teeth phase is a nightmare for everyone! Guess what, scientists have formulated a hormone gel that can regenerate tooth cells in as fast as one month! These scientists must really hate dentists, too.
According to reports, this gel could eliminate the need of filling cavities or drilling root canals of infected teeth. A relief for those who hate undergoing surgeries in dental clinics.
Just a dab of the gel to the infected tooth will heal the infection from within, as well as allowing cells to grow. This gel contains a peptide called MSH, melanocyte-stimulating hormone, which is the active ingredient responsible for bone regeneration.
A group of French scientists conducted the experiment, where they tested the gel to lab mice with cavities. Nadia Benkirane-Jessel, a scientist at the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale and a co-author of the paper, claimed that the mice's cavities disappeared after a month. Not only that the gel cured the cavities, but also made the newly grown tooth cells stronger!
However, experiments aren't conducted in humans, yet. Though Benkirane-Jessel says, it will probably work in some cases.
This discovery, though, doesn't imply that we won't be needing our toothbrushes in the future. We still have to keep our breath fresh for social acceptance, you know.
