Researchers Develop 1µm Full-Colored, Bendable Electronic Paper!

How do you like your paper? Sandy, to soften edges? Pad and yellow, for notes? Researchers have discovered a way to go full electronic paper - and in full color! Researchers from the Chalmers University of Technology has developed a kind of electronic paper that makes a LED display have a run for its money.

This electrifying discovery is apparently 1µm thin (this is thinner than a micrometer) and is just as flexible as normal paper. However, it needs ten times less the energy needed by a Kindle tablet, and displays all colors regular LED does. Chalmers researcher Andreas Dahlin and his student Kunli Xiong explained their paper makes use of external light to project its display. This allows it to use very minimal power, and can work almost anywhere with bright light. The paper relies heavily on the polymers covering its surface. They guide electric signals through the entire paper, which allows it to make images in high resolution.

Dahlin and his team has currently tested the paper with success using some pixels from the general RGB spectrum.  

A little wait

However, we may have to wait a little while longer because it's not yet ready for mass-production. It will currently be expensive due to the amount of gold and silver needed to manufacture the electronic paper's surface. Dahlin wants the new technology to be used in well-lit areas such as public places for information such as signs.
