The caterpillar that looks like Donald Trump’s hair really does exist! And its name is flannel moth caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis).
is actually known to have diverse colors from red to white to pink and yes, yellow. They are found in the south-eastern part of the US, South America, and Mexico.
Though the caterpillar may seem harmless, it can actually cause irritation and is called to be the most venomous caterpillars in North America. Their hairs can not only cause itching but they also contain sharp spines which are connected to venom gland cells. Pain from the caterpillar’s spine venom is said to last 12 hours.
Medical Entomologist from University of Florida, Dr. Donald Hall, told Wired
, “the pain is a deep, aching pain. It feels like it goes all the way to the bone. If you get stung on the finger the pain radiates up the arm. The swelling can go up to the armpit.”
So if ever you get stung by one of these dangerous caterpillars, apply an ice pack to minimize the swelling, and use duct tape to remove the spines. Also, go see a doctor if the hairs get in the eyes or you’re starting to have breathing issues.
