Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of SpaceX, unveiled his plan to colonize Mars with a million people in order for humanity to survive.
In a talk during the International Astronautical Congress
, Musk provided timelines, engineering details and a video.
Musk said that the estimated cost of developing the rocket to explore Mars would be about $10 billion. He then provided a timeline for carrying people to Mars in about 10 years.
Each of the SpaceX vehicles would carry 100 passengers to Mars every 26 months. The ticket might cost $500,000 at first, and will drop to about a third later on.
In order to establish a self-sustaining Mars civilization, it would take 10,000 flights.
Musk said, “We’re going to need something quite large to do that. It would take between 40 years to a century before the city on Mars became self-sufficient.”
Musk has mentioned about a “Mars Colonial Transporter” but during his talk, he called it
“Interplanetary Transport System” that would include SpaceX’s 42 new powerful Raptor engines.
“This system really gives you freedom to go anywhere you want in the greater solar system,” he said.
