A recent study by researchers
from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid with colleagues from Barcelona, Rovira i Virgil, and Zaragoza universities published in Science Advances identified four basic personality types: Optimistic, Pessimistic, Trusting, and Envious. The Envious Personality Type being the most common with 30% compared to the other types which only have 20%.
Researchers wrote, “These subjects seem to behave as driven by envy, status-seeking consideration, or lack of trust,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “These players prevent their counterparts from receiving more payoff than themselves even when, by doing so, they diminish their own potential payoff.”
The study is part of game theory which is a branch of mathematics with economics and sociology applications; it also examines how a person behaves when faced with a dilemma.
When compared to the ‘Big Five’ personalities
– extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness where it basically identifies the individual’s general psychology; the four new dimensions of personality describe the people’s behavior in a social context.
The study involved 541 volunteers into pairs and had them play “Stag Hunt” wherein the player had to choose to hunt between a rabbit or a stag (which is worth more). However, they can only choose to hunt a stag if both players choose to. But if the players choose to hunt a rabbit instead, they would get a raffle ticket worth 30 euros.
The game resulted to a conclusion that 30% were the envious types who went for the rabbit option since they cannot accept that the other person may be doing better than them even if it would mean that they’d receive less.
Optimists, on the other hand, were said to believe that their partners will make the best choices while Pessimists choose which animal to hunt based on the lesser of two evils. The Trusting types were discovered to be great in cooperating.
