It’s no secret that drinking water is good for you, but being dehydrated may be associated with a wider waistline, according to a recent study published in theAnnals of Family Medicine.
Researchers from the University of Michigan studied a group of about 9,500 adults aged 18 to 64 years from around the U.S. They found that people who weren’t adequately hydrated had a higher body mass index (BMI) than people who drank enough water.
In fact, people who were inadequately hydrated were 1.59 times more likely to be obese, compared with hydrated individuals.
“We found a significant association between inadequate hydration and elevated BMI and inadequate hydration and obesity,” the study’s authors wrote
Researchers noted that this study does not show that drinking less water causes weight gain or obesity. However, they said that these findings are significant because this is the first nationwide study to find a connection between inadequate hydration and obesity.
“Water, an essential nutrient, may deserve greater focus in weight management research and clinical strategies,” the authors noted.
